Simple trick – that’s how you know the avocado is ripe

Standing in front of the avocado shelf and choosing the perfect avocado can sometimes feel impossible. How do you know if the avocado is unripe, ripe or even rotten?

There are two tricks that will allow you to find out if the avocado is ripe right at the store. This means that you reduce waste and secure your guacamole.

The different stages of the avocado

A ripe avocado can look different and is therefore better suited to different dishes, writes Coop in one press release.

If you know you won’t eat the avocado right away, you can buy a slightly harder avocado that will be ripe in a few days. Store the avocado at room temperature while it ripens, writes The eco box.

But if the avocado is ripe and firm, it’s best in a salad the same day or you can let it sit for two to three days and then mash it into guacamole.

If you buy an avocado that is soft, it is best to use it for, for example, guacamole the same day.

Remove the knob

It is difficult to tell from an avocado whether it is ripe or not. Squeezing and feeling it can help a little, but when several people have gone and squeezed the whole avocado shelf, it might not feel so nice anymore.

To see if the avocado is ripe, you can easily look under the bud on the avocado. Start by selecting an avocado and removing the bud. Here’s how to determine if the avocado is ripe:

  • If the bud is very tight and the avocado is very light green inside, it is unripe.
  • If the bud can be easily removed and the avocado is green inside, it is ripe.
  • If the bud falls off and the avocado is brown inside, it is overripe.

The new invention – scans avocados

Another way to check how ripe the avocado is is to use a scanner. Avocado scanners are currently available at Coop stores.

It’s a machine that scans your avocado and tells you what stage of ripeness the avocado is in. Then you know if the avocado needs to be eaten today or if you can leave it and wait until Taco Friday.
