Turin – World number one Jannik Sinner and American tennis player Taylor Fritz advanced from the Ilie Nastase Group to Saturday’s semifinals of the Tournament of Champions in Turin. Fritz defeated Australian Alex De Minaur 5:7, 6:4, 6:3 in the final round of the group to claim his second victory. After the home Sinner won the first set against the Russian Daniil Medvedev, it was clear who would advance.
In the end, Sinner defeated Medvedev 6:3, 6:4 and went to the semifinals as the undisputed winner of the group. In three matches, the twenty-three-year-old domestic tennis player did not lose a set.
The debutant De Minaur was fighting for his first win at the Turin tournament, taking the opening set, but Fritz turned the tide of the more than two-hour match. He still has a negative balance of 4:5 with the Australian, he was able to beat him after almost two and a half years.
Former Tournament of Champions champion Medvedev needed a two-set victory in the evening duel with Sinner to advance, but lost the opening set 3-6 and it was clear that he was done for in Turin. The Russian tennis player has won only one of the last nine mutual matches, he did not even succeed in this year’s final of the Australian Open.
