Sinner, the captain of Argentina in the Davis Cup Coria goes on the attack on the doping case: “I was treated differently”

The captain of the Argentine Davis Cup team, Italy’s next opponent in the Finals, returns to his suspension for doping, pointing the finger at the different treatment reserved for Sinner

The captain of the Argentine team of Coppa DavisItaly’s next opponent at Finals, Guillermo Coria – former n°3 and finalist at Roland Garros 2004 – he reminded the site Clay his disqualification for doping, pointing the finger at the different treatment that in his opinion would have been reserved for him Jannik Sinnerwhose case however seems to differ from that of the South American.

Coria talks about his experience testing positive for doping

When he was not yet twenty years old and was considered one of the promising tennis players in the world, Guillerme Coria he was found positive for nandrolone – a dosing substance – and was initially suspended for two years, a sentence later reduced to seven months when he managed to demonstrate that he had taken it accidentally.

This is the story of the former No. 3 in the world and clay court specialist, who remained in the annals for the incredible comeback suffered in the final at Roland Garros in 2004 at the hands of his compatriot Gaston Gaudio: “Doping positivity it destroyed me, I was at the top of my career, then I came back with the hate. I invested my savings to bring a team of psychologists from Spain to show my personality, I also rented a lie detector in the United States.

I underwent a genetic study that confirmed through my hair what I consumed, it showed how the drug entered my body, through a vitamin complex that had not been used to derive any benefit, but when I arrived at the trial everything had already been decided”.

Coria: “I wasn’t treated the same way as Sinner”

Contrary to Jannik Sinner Coria he was suspended almost immediately and for this reason he thunders against the unequal treatment: “I was not treated the same way as Jannik and it didn’t make me feel good at all. It was a difficult stage for me but I finished it. The only thing I ask is that the treatment is the same for everyone”.

The case of Sinner differs with that of Coria on several aspects however. First of all, the Argentine was judged directly by the ATP – which at the time was directly responsible for controlling and sanctioning players – while the Italian’s case was followed first by an independent tribunal – the Itia – and in the coming months by the CAS in Lausanne.

Second, even without wanting to benefit from it, Coria voluntarily took the supplements responsible for the nandrolone positivity, while Jannik was the victim of contamination due to an ointment used by Naldi for a hand wound. In short, the only aspect that the two cases have in common is the absence of malice, which also explains the only seven-month disqualification given to Guillermo.

Sinner and Coria next opponents in the Davis Cup

Sinner e Coria in all likelihood they will be opponents on the field in the near future, to be precise on November 21st, when Italy and Argentina will compete for a place in the semifinals of the Davis Cup Finals. Guillermo is in fact the captain of the Albiceleste selection that will face the one led by Filippo Volandri.
