Siri won’t become sentient, but it will get better

In a recent interview, Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software, discussed the future evolutions of Siri and new technology Apple Intelligence. Despite the high expectations surrounding Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the tech sector, Federighi ruled out the idea that Siri could ever become a sentient entity, as some competing companies seem to aspire to do.

Apple announced that Apple Intelligence will be launched with the arrival of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1 e macOS Sequoia 15.1 by the end of October 2024 in the USA. However, unlike other companies that focus on Artificial General Intelligence, Apple has chosen a more conservative and targeted approach, with particular attention to privacy of users. Federighi underlined how Apple wants to offer practical, safe and useful tools to improve users’ daily experience, without the ambition of creating AI that simulates consciousness.

For example, Siri it’s already used for everyday tasks like opening the garage or sending messages, but it will never push itself to become a “sentient companion”. In contrast, Federighi cited features like i text summaries and the use of Clean Up to eliminate objects from images without altering the background, highlighting how Apple is not interested in more abstract functions, such as the automatic creation of essays or fictional narratives.

Apple’s approach, compared to that of companies such as OpenAI, Microsoft and Google, stands out for its commitment to protecting user data. In fact, Federighi explained that Apple prefers to develop solutions that work on devices themselves, using cloud integration that guarantees security, unlike other companies that accumulate large amounts of data to “train” their AI models.

When asked about release times for new features, Federighi spoke of a complex project that takes time: “We want to do it well, rather than launch something that’s messy.” This reflects recent statements by CEO Tim Cook, who reiterated that Apple was not the first to introduce AI, but is committed to becoming the best.
