Siri’s big upgrade is coming, but we’ll have to wait for iOS 19

Apple is working on a revolution for Siri, but the big leap will be postponed until the arrival of iOS 19. Despite the improvements expected with iOS 18.4, expected in April, the real transformation for Apple’s voice assistant will only come with a future version of the operating system, according to a recent report.

With iOS 18.4, Siri will receive significant updates thanks to new features related toApple Intelligenceincluding:

  • Display awareness: Siri will be “smarter” in recognizing the visual context of open apps.
  • Advanced per-app controls: Deeper application management, with specific commands for complex actions.
  • Understanding personal context: Siri will be able to interpret personalized requests, such as “When does Mom’s flight land?”.

However, these improvements will only be a prelude to what Apple has in the works for iOS 19.

Second Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, iOS 19 will bring a completely renewed version of Siri, capable of communicating in a more natural and fluid way. This new iteration will be supported by advanced language models similar to those of ChatGPT and Google Gemini, making Siri a voice assistant more capable of handling complex requests and supporting complex conversations, with responses appropriate to each context.

The preview of this version will probably be revealed at WWDC 2025but the official release is not expected before spring 2026, as part of a hypothetical iOS 19.4 update.

It’s no secret that Siri has fallen behind its competitors, such as Amazon’s Alexa and Google Assistant. The rise of generative AI-powered chatbots, such as ChatGPT, has further highlighted Siri’s limitations.

With the updates expected between iOS 18.4 and iOS 19.4, Apple finally aims to bridge this gap, offering an experience that promises to be closer to user expectations. However, the compatibility of these new features will be limited to newer devices, requiring at least one iPhone 15 Pro or later.
