Six dog breeds that are illegal in Norway – but allowed in Sweden

As of October 1, it is prohibited to breed, import, sell and relocate the American bully XL fighting dog breed in Ireland.

The decision was made after a series of attacks involving the dog breed. An attack in southeast Ireland injured a boy and an infant, and in Limerick a woman died when an American bully XL attacked, according to The Irish Times.

Banned dogs sent to Sweden: “Knowledge required”

The decision aroused strong feelings in Sweden as well – not least when it became clear that 22 of the dogs that were at risk of being euthanized in Ireland must be brought to Sweden to find new homes, or have already arrived here.

– This requires enormous knowledge and responsibility for those who take the role of bringing the dogs here and sluicing them on. It is a responsibility that I think very few dog experts would dare to take, said the dog expert Fredrik Steen in an interview with TV4.

SKK does not want a racial ban in Sweden: “Not the solution”

In Sweden, the Swedish Kennel Club, SKK, has previously been clear that they do not want to see any breed ban in Sweden.

They believe that it would have been more effective to impose stricter rules on breeders, so that the rogue operators cannot continue to operate their businesses.

– We always welcome investigations. But we think they had arrived at the same thing as us: That the solution is not a ban, has Janina Pfalzerpress officer at the Swedish Kennel Club, said Gothenburg Post.

The dog breeds that are banned in Denmark

In Sweden, we therefore have no breed bans at the moment, but it looks different in some of our neighboring countries.

In Denmark, 13 dog breeds have been banned since 2010. The ban also includes dogs that are a mix of any of the breeds.

Some of the breeds found on the list are Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Bulldog and Tosa.

The dog breeds that are banned in Norway

In Norway, too, there is a ban on six dog breeds. As in Denmark, it is also forbidden to mix any of the races.

There is also a ban on breeding English Bulldogs and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. It is considered against the Animal Welfare Act to breed the breeds, even though they are popular, because they have several defects and disorders, according to Gothenburg Post.

Here are the six dog breeds that are banned in Norway:

  • Pitbullterrier
  • American Staffordshire terrier
  • Brazilian Fila
  • Draw a drink
  • Little argentino
  • Czechoslovakian Wolfdog
