SK Chairman Chey Tae-won visited CES held in Las Vegas, USA on the 8th (local time) and mentioned the business discussions that took place during a meeting with NVIDIA CEO Jensen Hwang and revealed SK’s AI business vision.
In response to reporters’ questions about his meeting with CEO Hwang, Chairman Choi said, “We met with each other and discussed various business-related issues. Previously, the other party’s request was to ‘develop faster,’ but recently, SK Hynix’s development “We are proactively increasing the speed and working head-to-head to make things faster.” He went on to explain, “CEO Hwang’s idea was that (NVIDIA) was a company that understands computing well and finds and creates computing-related solutions in the most efficient way, and in fact, it was acting that way.”
When asked about his thoughts on visiting CES for the third year in a row, Chairman Choi said, “Everything is becoming AI, and this is an exhibition where you can see that AI is starting to enter everything.” He added, “It is an exhibition where you can see that AI is starting to enter everything.” “It was an opportunity to confirm that the installation of AI has become routine and common sense,” he said.
Chairman Choi also introduced the vision for promoting the data center business in relation to SK’s AI business. Chairman Choi said, “(Currently) we are working on AI semiconductors, but what we are doing new is finding a model that can become an AI data center solution, and we are making AI data-related business our main priority.”
He continued to emphasize that Korea must not fall behind in the competition in the AI industry, saying, “AI is something we must do now whether we like it or not, and if we fall behind in this competition, the competitiveness of all the industries we have boasted of, including semiconductors, shipbuilding, and steel, will be threatened.” “He said. He also said, “AI is not an option; it is an industry that is creating omnidirectional changes across all fields, like the Internet environment or steam engines.” He added, “If possible, economic ups and downs will depend on whether you lead this change at the forefront or follow it.” “I have no choice but to do it,” he said.
Suggestions for the development of the domestic AI industry were also added. Chairman Choi said, “We need to develop API (Application Programming Interface) in some form ourselves,” and added, “We also need support for manufacturing-related AI, robotics-related AI, or strategies for specific regions.” If overall growth is pursued without specialization in the AI industry, it will be difficult to win in global competition with the size and capabilities of a single company or organizational unit.
Lastly, Chairman Choi emphasized AI infrastructure and people, saying, “To determine how many people can use AI on a regular basis through education, a basic environment must be created where people who create and research AI can experiment with AI and produce results.” “I do it,” he said. He said, “If we become completely dependent on other countries and other places, it will become quite difficult to pioneer our own future. We must create what we need ourselves, and the situation will continue where we cannot depend on others forever.”
