Ski jumping: Norwegian star Tande retires

Daniel-Andre Tande has experienced a lot in his career as a ski jumper: triumphs, tears and a brutal fall. The latter has now forced the Norwegian to take off his skis and put them in the corner.

In an emotional video message, Tande announced his retirement from ski jumping. “I’m still struggling with the aftermath of my fall in Planica in 2021,” said the 30-year-old: “I’ve had to realize that jumping now causes me more fear than joy. And I always said that at a point like this it’s time to say goodbye.”

Tande had a serious fall in the 2021 ski flying trials in Planica. After jumping off, he lost his balance and hit the front section hard at 78 meters. Tande slid down the slope unconscious, lay motionless and was given artificial respiration at the ski jump.

In order to relieve the strain on his brain, the doctors treating Tande later put him into an artificial coma in the hospital. Just five months later, the jumper returned to the ski jump and completed his first training jumps again.

Ski jumper Tande dramatically missed out on victory at the Tour

Tande made his World Cup debut in 2014, winning 13 individual competitions. In the 2016/17 season, he dramatically missed out on overall victory in the Four Hills Tournament at the last competition in Bischofshofen: the binding on his right ski came loose in the final round.

Tande celebrated great success in ski flying: in 2018 he was crowned individual world champion in Oberstdorf, and he won gold three times with the team. Tande was also successful at the Olympic Games: at the competitions in Pyeongchang in 2018 he won the gold medal with the Norwegian quartet.

Tande celebrated his last World Cup victory in March 2022 at the legendary Holmenkollen in Oslo.
