Skoda Fabia turns 25 since its debut

The Skoda Fabia has turned 25 since its launch, having been launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 14, 1999. Almost 5 million copies have been sold in the last 25 years.

The Czech manufacturer’s subcompact class model has played an important role in its success over the past quarter of a century. The first generation debuted on September 14, 1999 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, quickly winning over customers. The next three generations built on this foundation, with nearly five million units sold to date. Fabia also left its mark in motorsport, entering the scene in 2003 with the Skoda Fabia WRC. Today, this legacy is continued by the Fabia RS Rally2.

The Škoda Fabia was among the main premieres at the 58th edition of the Frankfurt Motor Show. It debuted as a five-door hatchback and was positioned as a successor to the Skoda Felicia. Less than a year after its launch, a station wagon version followed, and in 2001, the sedan version went into production.

The design of the first generation Fabia was created by a team of around twenty designers, led by Škoda’s head of design at the time, Dirk van Braeckel. In March 2003, the RS sports version made its debut, being equipped with a 1.9-liter diesel engine that produced 131 hp.

In March 2007, the second generation Skoda Fabia premiered at the Geneva Motor Show. Based on the same platform as the first generation, the new model was slightly longer (+22 mm) and taller (+47 mm). The third generation Škoda Fabia was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October 2014. Technologically, it benefited from the modern PQ26 platform, while the design acquired sharper and more dynamic lines, helped by a change in proportions; the car was 90 mm wider and 30 mm shorter than its predecessor.

The fourth and latest iteration of the subcompact model debuted in 2021, being built on the MQB A0 platform. The fourth generation exceeds 4.1 meters in length, and the trunk space has increased to 380 liters, 50 liters more than the previous generation.
