Skoda Kylaq: smaller size, slightly cheaper

In Europe, the Kamiq is currently the smallest crossover that Skoda can supply. The 4.24 meter long compact crossover is not for sale in India. Instead, it delivers the Kushaq, a several centimeters shorter model that not only looks different, but is also on a cheaper variant of the MQB Ao platform. In India, cars shorter than 4 meters are slightly more attractive for tax reasons, so Skoda will soon launch a model in that category. It is called Kylaq and can now be seen in tangible form for the first time, although the compact Skoda is still fanatically covered with camouflage stickers. The name of the Kylaq is striking. First of all, because Skoda did not come up with it itself. The name Kylaq was the winning entry in a naming competition that Skoda recently organized. Skoda reserves model names ending in -aq for its relatively large long-legged models. Think of the Enyaq and the Kodiaq. Model names ending in -oq are intended for compact mid-range cars such as the Karoq and Elroq. And model names that end in -iq? These are for the most compact models: the Kamiq and the yet-to-be-revealed Epiq. Even though the Kylaq will be Skoda’s smallest crossover, it will receive the suffix that Skoda normally reserves for its largest models. With its car length of 3.99 meters (and 5 millimeters), the Skoda Kylaq is just four meters long. It has a wheelbase of 2.57 meters, which means it has 8 centimeters less between the front and rear axle than the well-known Kamiq. In India, the Kylaq will in any case be available with a 115 hp 1.0 TSI three-cylinder petrol engine. We expect the Kylaq to have a starting price of just under €10,000 in India. After all, the Kushaq is worth around 12 grand in the order books.
