Smartphone market in Africa: how is it going and which are the best-selling brands?

According to an analysis on smartphone market in Africa conducted by Canalysrevealed moderate but significant growth in the third quarter of 2024, up 3% year-on-year, reaching 18.4 million units sold. The forecast for 2025 is no better, with one expected growth of 1%.

In detail, the growth of the smartphone market occurred in a context characterized by economic uncertainties, inflation and energy volatility. Despite stabilizing currencies in some areas and easing pricing pressures, issues such as rising operating costs and weak consumer demand persist. Indeed, Canalys highlighted that the future of the market will depend on the ability of governments and suppliers to address these structural obstacles.

Among the various African countries, theEgypt stands out for truly significant growth, recording a 34% increase in smartphone shipments, success attributed to localized production which has drastically reduced dependence on imports. In fact, the smartphone import bill dropped by 99% in the first half of 2024 compared to 2021.

On the contrary, the Nigeriadespite being the second largest market on the continent, saw modest growth of 1%. The devaluation of the Naira has weighed heavily on consumer demand. Since the beginning of the year, the currency has lost almost 70% of its value.

The study of Canalys rha reported that the average price of smartphones decreased by 6% in the third quarter of 2024. Smartphones under $100 saw a surge of 35%, reflecting the growing demand for affordable devices.
