Smartwatch not charging? You can do this

Are you having problems charging your smartwatch? In these ways you may be able to solve the problem yourself.

When your smartwatch is not charging: 6 tips

There is nothing more annoying than a smartwatch that charges poorly, irregularly or no longer charges at all. Sometimes the solution is within reach, but in most cases there is more to it. In this article we show what you can do when your smartwatch no longer charges (properly).

1. Restart

Anyone who calls the helpdesk of an electronics company already knows what the first tip will be. The helpdesk employee will ask if you can turn off the device, wait a moment and turn the product back on.

Before we continue, it is therefore important to restart the smartwatch. It won’t be the first time that charging suddenly works.

2. Try a new charging cable (and adapter)

Clichés sometimes work, but not always. Therefore, it is time to look at the charging cable and adapter.

Many smartwatches are charged with a magnetic block that clicks onto the back of the watch. Change the USB cable and see if the new one transmits power. Also try charging with another charging pad, if you have one. Often the problem is either in the cable or in the adapter.

3. Clean the charging point

So much for the low hanging fruit. If your smartwatch still does not charge, it is time to clean the charging point. How you do this varies per watch model.

Most smartwatches charge via contact points on the back of the case. The magnetic charging pad clicks into place here, after which charging begins.

Cleaning the charging point is quite simple. Clean the contact points of both your smartwatch and charger with a damp and clean (microfiber) cloth.

Be careful as the charging surfaces are very sensitive. Also be careful with cleaning alcohol and disinfectants. It is far from certain that your smartwatch and charger can withstand this.

After you have cleaned the charging points, it is time to dry them. Use another clean (microfiber) cloth for this. Now try to see if your smartwatch charges again.

4. Install update

It doesn’t happen often, but sometimes a software update solves the charging problem. Updates the watch via the Settings app on the paired smartphone, or via the settings menu of the smartwatch itself.

5. Calibrate battery

Does your smartwatch charge, but does the battery percentage constantly fluctuate? Then try calibrating the battery. The total battery capacity decreases over time and therefore the watch no longer ‘knows’ exactly how full the battery is. Therefore an estimate is made. By calibrating the battery, you make that estimate more accurate and the battery percentage shown is closer to the truth.

You calibrate a smartwatch by placing the watch on the charger and fully charging the battery, up to one hundred percent. Then let the clock charge for at least another two hours.

Then use the smartwatch as you always do, until it turns itself off due to an empty battery. Then charge the battery again to one hundred percent. The battery is now calibrated.

6. To the manufacturer

If nothing seems to work, there is only one thing to do: contact the manufacturer (or seller). There may be something wrong with the hardware of your smartwatch, such as a defective battery. If your smartwatch is still under warranty, your repair is probably free. You may have to pay extra for slightly older models.
