Behind the most famous landscape of Zakynthos in Greece, according to the stories, there is a cigarette order of the Italian mafia.
Smugglers’ rusty ship
The most popular attraction of Zakynthos, which is part of the Greek Ionian Islands, is Navagio Beach, whose rusted wreck and peculiar location attract tourists.
The small beach hidden by high cliffs is already a special destination in itself, but the wreck and the related mystical story make the beach even more interesting.
Known as Hylkypoukama or Smugglers’ Cove, the beach got its name from the ship that wrecked there in 1982. According to the stories, the ship, now covered in rust, was used by smugglers when the engine was damaged and the Panayiotis ship, loaded with illegal cigarettes intended for the Italian mafia, drifted ashore.
The beach is conveniently hidden in the embrace of high cliffs, and tourists do not visit it by chance. Navagio Beach can only be reached by boat, and there are plenty of guided tours. In summer, the beach is teeming with visitors.
You can also see the landscape from above, because there is a great vantage point on top of the rocks surrounding the cove, where you can visit, for example, by car or bike along winding mountain roads.
