Snow and cold at Christmas and Boxing Day, how long will the wave of frost last and where will it snow: the weather forecast

Strong winds, frost and snow expected for Christmas and Boxing Day. Between Wednesday 25 December and Thursday 26 December there will be snow at low altitude and a wave of arctic frost in the central-south regions but this is a weather situation that is destined to last a short time.

Cold, strong wind and snow even on the hills will characterize this Christmas 2024 for Italians. Between Wednesday 25 December and Thursday 26 December, Boxing Day, the disturbance with the cold air and the wave of frost that is affecting our country will continue to maintain conditions of high weather instability especially in the central-southern regions. There snow will fall up to low altitude and below 600 meters in the Apennines but there will be widespread frosts and winter temperatures throughout Italy and gusts of strong winds from the north-east up to 60-80 km/h.

Where it will snow on Christmas and Boxing Day, snow is expected even at low altitude

Thanks to core of cold air of Arctic origin, which has arrived in the Mediterranean from Northern Europe, snow is expected at Christmas even at low altitude in the central-southern Apennines with snow levels even below 600 meters in Abruzzo, Molise, Marche, Campania and Basilicata and above 800 meters between Calabria and northern Sicily. In the rest of Italy, however, we will have drier weather and sunny spaces, particularly in the north. On Santo Stefano, however, thanks to a rise in high pressure, the weather will gradually improve even in the center with residual showers and more intermittent snowfall in the same regions. Prelude to a Friday in which the weather will also improve in the southern regions.

Temperature drop and frost, how long will the wave of arctic cold and wind in Italy last

The vast disturbance with cold air that is affecting our country has brought icy winds of arctic origin which have caused temperatures to drop to decidedly winter levels. Even in the north, where the weather will be dry, between Christmas and Boxing Day we will see widespread frosts and intense winds. A weather situation which, however, is destined to last little. In fact, already on December 26th, the phenomena will be significantly easing and with the return of high pressure, temperatures will rise everywhere. From 27 December the weather will improve further in the center and then also in the south with last light rains only in Puglia, lower Calabria and Sicily.
