Sobering forecast from Alexander Zverev

Tennis star Alexander Zverev announced a few days ago that pneumonia was the reason for his recent fluctuating performance and his decision not to take part in the tournament in Beijing. Now the world number two from Hamburg gave a rather sobering update on his health. He still wants to serve at the Masters in Shanghai.

“The problem I have with my lungs is not going to go away in a week or two. It will probably take a month or two for it to completely go away,” the 27-year-old explained in several videos. He has been taking antibiotics “for a week” to get the difficulties under control. “I hope that it gets better every week,” Zverev continued.

Especially during the Laver Cup in Berlin (September 20th to 22nd), it was obvious that Zverev was quickly at the end of his tether.

Now the French Open finalist realized how bad he really felt: “I had a pretty high fever, I had to throw up a lot. I just wasn’t fit,” Zverev made it clear that he was in the fight between Team Europe and Team world was struggling extremely.

Of the three games Zverev took part in in the German capital, he was only able to win one. Europe was still able to win after two unsuccessful attempts.

Zverev is “happy to be able to play”

Zverev is still not fit, but he hopes that his health will be back to full health by the end of the year.

Zverev’s start at the upcoming Masters in Shanghai is still not in jeopardy. From a medical perspective, he was assured that his health would not suffer any setback if he played sports. “I’m happy to be able to play and do my best,” said the North German, but he wasn’t too upset.

In the Chinese metropolis, Zverev is in second place behind the Italian world number one Jannik Sinner. The Tokyo Olympic champion has a bye in the first round and will then face a qualifier.
