Social Democrats lead Lithuanian Seimas elections

After the counting of votes in all 1947 polling stations in the multi-mandate district, the list of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party received 19.36% of the votes, which gives it 18 of the 70 mandates in the multi-mandate district.

The second is the largest party of the current ruling coalition – the conservative “Union of the Fatherland – Lithuanian Christian Democrats”, which won 17.96% of the vote and 17 mandates.

In third place with 14.99% of votes and 14 mandates is the right-wing populist party “Nemunas Rytasma”, founded last year.

It is followed by the currently opposition center-left Democratic Party “For Lithuania” with 9.24% of the vote and eight mandates and the Liberal Movement, which is part of the current ruling coalition, with 7.7% of the vote and seven mandates.

According to the preliminary results, the opposition center-left Union of Lithuanian Farmers and Greens received 7.02% of the vote, which provides it with six mandates.

One of the three ruling coalition parties – the liberal Freedom Party, which won 4.5% of the vote – has not overcome the five percent barrier to enter the Seimas in the multi-mandate district. The center-right party “Polish Election Action – Union of Christian Families” received 3.89% of the votes, the right-wing National Union – 2.87% of the votes, the center-left Lithuanian People’s Party – 2.64% of the votes, the “Peace Coalition”, which includes the center-left The Labor Party, the right-wing Christian Democratic Party of Lithuania and the center-right Zemaiš Party, – 2.2% of the votes, the left-wing Party of Regions of Lithuania – 1.9% of the votes, the Green Party of Lithuania – 1.68% of the votes, “Union of People and Justice (centrists, nationalists)” – 1.38% of votes, and the liberal party “Freedom and Justice” – 0.75% of votes.

To enter the Seimas, party lists must overcome the 5% barrier, and the Union of Lithuanian Farmers and Greens and the “Peace Coalition” as party associations – the 7% barrier.

The number of mandates won by parties will also be affected by the results in single-mandate constituencies. One of the single-mandate district deputies elected in the first round of the elections is the leader of the “Nemunas dawn” party, Remigijius Žemaitaitis, who won in the single-mandate district of Ķelme-Šilale.

The Seimas, which has 141 members, is elected for four years. 70 deputies are elected in multi-mandate districts according to party lists, and 71 deputies are elected in single-mandate districts.

On October 13, the first round of elections took place, in which all MPs from multi-mandate districts are elected, as well as those MPs from single-mandate districts who will receive more than half of the votes, if no less than 40% of the voters registered in this electoral district have voted. If the turnout is less than 40%, the winner will be the candidate who received the most votes, but not less than one-fifth of all the votes of all registered voters in the constituency. The second round of elections will be held in the other single-mandate districts on October 27.

More than 2.3 million Lithuanian citizens have the right to vote. Voter turnout in the first round was 52.06%.
