Solar installed power increased by a factor of ten in the first half of this year

By July of this year, a total of 6,712 megawatts of solar power plants were put into operation in Hungary, according to recent data from the transmission system operator MAVIR. Industrial facilities benefit from the largest proportion of the total output with 3,678 megawatts. The systems above 50 kW reached their current quarter-hour production peak in June this year, which was only slightly below 3,200 megawatts. The total capacity of the now nearly 275,000 household-sized small power plants is 2,514 megawatts, with another 520 megawatts for private producers. Compared to the end of last year, the first half-year expansion was 673 megawatts, so in the first six months of 2024, the installed capacity of domestic solar systems increased by about a tenth.

Based on the time-proportional progress, as in the past two years, the domestic solar energy capacity can increase by more than 1 gigawatt, which is outstanding in international comparison.

According to the report published by the Hungarian Energy and Public Utilities Regulatory Office a few days ago, the installed capacity of solar panels increased from 2 MW to 4,235 MW between 2010 and 2022. Following the vigorous growth of recent years, our country reached the 6 gigawatts previously targeted for 2030 six years earlier, by the spring of 2024. The National Energy and Climate Plan, which is under revision, therefore expects twice as much installed capacity of 12 gigawatts by the beginning of the next decade.

The Ministry of Energy emphasizes in its social media post: Hungary wants to be at the forefront of its production and storage in homes, industrial sites and vehicles.

An important result is that in 2023, our country had the third highest proportion of solar energy in electricity production in the world and the second highest in Europe.

The government is encouraging increased and more efficient utilization of green energy with HUF 230 billion in programs already running. The further solar power increase is significantly promoted by the Napenergia Plusz Program. Most of the supported developments can be completed in the second half of 2024. Thanks to the increase in the budget, the program can take over two-thirds of their investment costs from more than 25,000 families. By installing the solar panel and energy storage at the same time, the winners can produce green energy for their own purposes, thus increasing their self-sufficiency and reducing their electricity bills.
