According to a recent report by MoneyControlApple has decided to expand its production in Indiastarting to produce the top-of-the-line iPhone “Pro” models for the first time in the country.
Apple began manufacturing iPhones in India in 2017 with the iPhone SE. Since then, it has gradually increased its assembly operations in the country, including models such as the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14. However, production of these models in India has always begun several months after their global launch. This pattern changed with the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, which were manufactured and made available in India from day one of their global release.
Now, Apple plans to to produce the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max in India by the end of the year. The production of these models will be handled by Apple’s long-time partner Foxconn at its Sriperumbudur plant in Tamil Nadu. The New Product Introduction (NPI) process will begin soon, with mass production expected to launch the devices.
The move is part of Apple’s broader strategy to diversify its supply chain, reduce dependence on China and boost manufacturing capabilities in India. The company aims to produce a quarter of all its iPhones in India in the coming years, compared to the current 14%. The Indian government is actively encouraging such investments, offering incentives to attract large producers.
Apple itself is investing heavily in production to meet the expected very high demand for the iPhone 16 line, planning to produce 90 million units in 2024, a 10% increase over last year’s iPhone 15 models.
