Sony demands paid subscription for popular Dutch PlayStation game

Sony is often not thanked for this, but it will really do it with the Dutch game hit Horizon Zero Dawn. It makes it mandatory to have a PlayStation Plus subscription for the upcoming remake of the game.

Horizon Zero Dawn, made by the Dutch Guerrilla Games, is getting the remake treatment and will be released on October 31 on PlayStation 5 and PC. It is highly anticipated, because the game would get a visual overhaul and more realistic dialogues. If you already have the original, you can upgrade it for $10, but if you want to purchase the remaster separately, it will cost you $49.99. Euro prices are still unknown, but are expected to be around that price point.

PSN required

However, that is not the only thing you lose in the game, because PSN is also a requirement, even on PC. You used to have PSN, PlayStation Network, which you could purchase as a separate subscription and allowed you to play online. This now falls under PlayStation Plus, which again has three different flavors. The most expensive is 16.99 euros per month (12.66 euros if you pay for a year at once). You will then get many other options, such as access to a gaming library with free games and cloud streaming options. In the latter category, you do not need to have downloaded the game, but it is played from a server that quickly translates your moves (your button presses) into the game via the internet.

A subscription to PlayStation Network is therefore not cheap, even if you look for it as cheaply as possible. The cheapest is PlayStation Plus Essential, which costs 6 euros per month if you pay for a year at once. You also get useful extras, such as free games every month and discounts on games, in addition to the option to play online, which Sony makes mandatory for Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered.

Not possible everywhere

It is not only annoying to have to take out such a paid subscription: in some countries it is not possible. For those people, they cannot play the game.
