Sony is reportedly preparing a new portable PlayStation that runs PS5 games anywhere

According to a recent report published by Bloomberg, Sony would be working on a new portable console.

Unlike PlayStation Portal, which only works by streaming from a PS5 console, the new device will be able to run PS5 games independently, without the need for a connection to the main console.

The technological challenges behind the new console

Developing the device comes with several technical challenges.

For example, to deliver the PS5-specific visual experience in a portable format, Sony engineers must come up with solutions for several critical aspects.

One in hand: It is necessary to implement very wide bandwidth LPDDR6 memory modules to support the graphics processing.

Hand in hand, the combination of processor and graphics card must be powerful enough to render PS5-level graphics, but also energy efficient.

Microsoft steps in

The American company is not sitting on the sidelines either.

Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, confirmed that Microsoft is also working on its own handheld console, but that it is still several years away from an official launch.

It would be a historic moment for the company: they have never had anything like this in their portfolio before.

A new era in the video game industry

The success of the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck consoles has shown that there is a huge market for high-performance portable gaming. Sales have been impressive and the player community is continuously growing.

With all this in mind, it should come as no surprise that both companies want to secure a strong position in this segment.

Sony already has experience in the field with the PSP and PS Vita, but the new console promises to be far beyond them technologically.

The future of portable gaming

According to experts, it’s quite possible like the new ones console to appear only in 2027.

Until then, the challenges remain considerable: from developing the right hardware to securing support from game studios, which will need to adapt their titles for the specifications of these handheld devices.

In addition, the success of these consoles will also depend on the pricing strategies and the exclusivities offered in an increasingly competitive market, where there are already strong players such as Lenovo Legion Go or ASUS ROG Ally.
