Sony is working on a new gaming console. It is meant to compete with Nintendo with the ability to play games without Wi-Fi

According to the latest information, Sony is working on a new handheld console that should allow playing games designed for the PlayStation 5 anywhere and without the need for an Internet connection. Sony already offers something similar in the form of PlayStation Portal, but it limits players to playing only within their home Wi-Fi network.

The new console is going after Nintendo and Microsoft

With the new device, Sony is targeting the competition, especially the popular Nintendo Switch, as well as Microsoft, which is preparing its own portable game console. While the new generation Nintendo Switch should be introduced next year, according to the magazine The Verge we will have to wait much longer for Sony’s handheld – its launch is rather a matter of several years.

The new console should make it possible to play games directly on the device without having to own a PlayStation 5 at all. Games should also be played offline without the need to connect to Wi-Fi, in the same way that Steam Deck consoles from Valve or, for example, ROG currently have Ally from Asus.

Compact gaming handhelds are new territory for Sony, despite having previously released its PS Vita (a more than 13-year-old device) and the aforementioned PlayStation Portal (which is closer to a streaming device than a games console).
