Sony releases the first standard zoom lens with a constant aperture of F2 in the GM range

Sony today launches the new FE 28-70mm F2 GM E-mount lens, which offers a large F2 aperture throughout the zoom range to achieve stunning bokeh, high resolution and quality autofocus for both stills and video. Thus, images are captured at levels of clarity and contrast comparable to those obtained with fixed prime lenses. The lens has a compact, lightweight and well-balanced design, giving professionals and creators complete freedom to capture a variety of scenarios, including portraits, weddings, sports, documentaries and cinematic videos.

Sharp and refined images in a single lens with standard zoom and constant F2

The FE 28-70mm F2 GM is the first standard zoom lens in the G Master range, with a constant F2 aperture, ideal for stills and video. Advanced design and state-of-the-art optical developments enable zoomed images of a quality that rivals that of fixed prime lenses, thanks to three XA (extremely aspherical) elements manufactured using original techniques. These elements provide high resolution at F2 throughout the zoom range. Floating focus also allows for excellent sharpness, even at close focal lengths of up to 0.38m/1.25ft across the entire zoom range.

Sony’s original Nano AR II coating minimizes reflections and ghosting, and optics designed to reduce internal reflections provide additional strength, ensuring high clarity even when strong light sources are in the frame. The lens in the G Master range offers a refined and delicate bokeh effect, and captured images have depth and complexity, thanks to the fact that, in both the design and manufacturing stages, spherical aberration was carefully controlled with XA elements and a new 11-blade diaphragm unit. In addition, Super ED (Very Low Dispersion) and ED glass elements effectively reduce chromatic aberrations.

Compact and lightweight design, equipped with exceptional optics and functionality

The FE 28-70mm F2 GM lens allows shooting with all the advantages of a zoom without compromising on image quality. Innovative technologies such as advanced optics and XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors make it possible to integrate all these features into an F2 constant aperture zoom lens with a compact design of only 92.9 x 139.8 mm (3-3/4 x 5-5/8) and only 918 g (32.4 oz).

Precise autofocus with immediate response

Four XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors and the latest algorithm precisely control the focus group. They offer reliable focus on the move and instant response, essential for events such as weddings or sporting events, where every frame counts. This lens is compatible with the α9 III’s high-speed continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking at up to 120 frames per second, even while zooming.

Designed for motion picture production

By using the latest optical technologies, the new Sony lens effectively reduces the phenomenon of “focus breathing” for more refined images. Sharp shift (rack focus) and zoom effects can be used with depth of field at F2 to create smooth and natural transitions. In addition, precise focusing for 4K 120p/FHD 240p recording is easy to achieve thanks to the high AF (autofocus) tracking performance. XD linear motors and the newly developed diaphragm unit operate quietly and support the α lens’s ‘breathing compensation’ function, along with the ‘Active Mode’ image stabilization of the α series cameras.

Reliability and operability for the needs of professionals

Control features include Linear Response MF for intuitive manual focus, adjustable torque for the zoom ring and an aperture ring with ON/OFF switch. There are also two customizable focus hold buttons, an iris lock switch and an AF/MF switch. The filter diameter is 86 mm and the sun visor has a window for easy operation of the variable filters, being designed with users in mind.

Buttons and switches are fitted with silicone seals, the lens mount includes a rubber ring, and all other critical areas are precisely and carefully designed to prevent dust and moisture from entering, ensuring maximum reliability in harsh outdoor conditions. The front element is coated with a fluorine layer, which effectively repels potential contamination and helps to make cleaning easier.

Price and availability

The FE 28-70mm F2 GM lens will be available from December 2024, at a price of approximately 17,800 lei, at authorized Sony distributors.
