Sony reportedly choosing AMD chip for PlayStation 6: with good reason

The hefty PlayStation 5 Pro has just been announced, but people are already eagerly awaiting a PlayStation 6. Sony has reportedly opted for AMD processors for the new console, and that is an understandable choice.

The processor is the part that determines the computing power of a game console and that is a very important part. You do not want a game to stutter or to stare at a loading screen for minutes. Sony must therefore weigh up the pros and cons carefully before it goes into business with a supplier: after all, the processor is the heart of the device.

Race between Intel and AMD

It would have been a race between Intel and AMD for the PlayStation 6, with rumors that AMD won the contract. That’s not entirely surprising. AMD made the chip in the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, so Sony has previously had faith in the American company.

However, it is not a choice that is necessarily based on the relationship between the organizations. Intel would miss out because using a different chip would affect the backwards compatibility of the console. You might not be able to play games from the PlayStation 5 on the PlayStation 6 with an Intel chip, writes Reuters. It would not be based on the problems Intel is currently having with its crashing Raptor Lake processors and the huge losses it is suffering, which even resulted in the layoff of 15,000 people: these talks were already taking place in 2022.

PlayStation 6 release date

If the rumor is true, it will be a tough blow for Intel, which will lose 30 billion dollars in revenue. It has been asked for a response, but indicates that it does not make statements about ongoing or possible customer discussions.

Does this information coming out mean that Sony’s new console is almost here? Don’t expect the PlayStation 6 to be released anytime soon. Looking at PlayStation’s Japanese release dates, where the console always comes out first, there has always been a 6-7 year gap so far:

  • PlayStation – december 1994
  • PlayStation 2 – March 2000
  • PlayStation 3 – november 2006
  • PlayStation 4 – november 2013
  • PlayStation 5 – november 2020

The new PlayStation 6 is therefore expected in 2026 at the earliest, but that would be very soon – especially considering all the corona issues with PlayStation 5. We expect November 2027.
