Handhelds, or consoles for the pocket or on the go, are experiencing a revival and enjoy high popularity. There are more and more of them on the market, and their renaissance was sparked by the excellent Steam Deck from Valve. Now the Japanese video game giant Sony would like to enter this segment. It definitely has the resources and experience to do so, so the result could be very interesting.
Sony has a handheld, right?
And it’s called PlayStation Portal. But it’s not exactly a typical on-the-go console, although with the latest update it’s finally possible to play games on this handheld console without depending on PlayStation. However, the games still do not run natively on this console and it is about playing in the cloud, i.e. streaming from servers to the device. But Sony is said to be preparing a full-fledged handheld.
A reputable agency came up with this information Bloomberg and it’s not the first time that a full-fat travel console has been talked about in connection with Sony. It should be a model that can rock games from the current PlayStation 5, which is a fairly ambitious plan and definitely something that gamers would like to hear about.
The competition is huge
In any case, the fact is that the competition in this segment is huge, and in addition to the mentioned Steam Deck, there are also ROG Ally models from Asus, MSI Claw and Lenovo Legion Go on the market. Microsoft is also reportedly preparing its model at the moment, so it will be increasingly tight between game consoles on the go and it will not be easy to gain ground.
The PlayStation Portal was supposed to take the form of a full-fledged travel console on which games would run natively, but the Japanese giant chose the path of cloud gaming. In any case, Sony has not yet commented on the situation surrounding this supposedly upcoming model, and we’ll see if we learn anything more about this venture in the foreseeable future.
When could Sony’s handheld arrive?
Of course, this is in the stars, but according to the above-mentioned Bloomberg agency, the development of this possible news is only in the initial phase. It is quite possible that we will see a similar feat in a few years, for example with the arrival of the PlayStation 6. If Sony is really working on something like this, further leaks will surely follow.
