Until some time ago, Talking about a portable PlayStation was making an allusion to the pastspecifically the memory that both PSP and PS Vita left us, two different devices from each other, but that left many users with a very good taste in their mouths (such was my case with PSP). However, part of what we understood as the decline of portable consoles had, as one of the main protagonists, Sony, when it decided to abandon that market, back in early 2019, after announcing it in 2018. Now, however, It also sounds like the future.
As I say, for years the portable console market seemed to be the exclusive fiefdom of Nintendo and niche devices, without other big brands betting on it, but tEverything changed when Valve jumped into the pool with Steam Deck. Thanks to San Gave Newell’s bet, on-the-go consoles returned to the front line and, in a matter of about a year from that moment, we began to see renewed confidence in a market that, today, shows signs of enjoy excellent health, with many and varied devices, among which it is difficult not to find one that adjusts quite well to our preferences.
It hasn’t all been good news, mind you. You will surely remember that, at one point, rumors began to circulate that Sony was also seriously considering returning to that market. A few years had passed since it abandoned it and, due to the change that I mentioned above, we thought that the Japanese technology company was thinking about it. However, what rumors and leaks proposed as a portable PlayStation, in the style of its previous pocket models, ended up being PlayStation Portal, something that for many (I include myself in the list again) was a considerable disappointment. Thus, we had almost made up our minds that we could not expect anything from Sony in this regard. But, as you will see, I speak in the past tense.
And why do I speak in the past tense? Well because, as far as we can leather and VG247, Sony is working on a new portable PlayStation. This project, still in its initial stages, is emerging as a device that will allow you to run PlayStation 5 games nativelywithout the need for a constant internet connection as is the case with the PlayStation Portal. Although details about the hardware or its price have not yet been leaked, this new device aims to position itself as an ideal complement for PlayStation 5 users, especially if a single purchase of each title allows it to be played on both platforms.
There is still no information on dates or specific characteristicsbut leaks about its development have revived expectations about Sony’s return to the portable console market. And this device could inherit part of the technology that has made the PS5 popular, such as 3D audio and haptic response, so we would be talking about a considerable (and also expected, of course) evolution compared to what we remember of Sony’s previous presence in this market.
We’re talking about rumors and leaks, so we should take this with skepticism, but the fact that Microsoft (more specifically Phil Spencer) has been talking for some time about its intention to work on a portable Xbox, must undoubtedly have forced Sony to rethink its position with regarding laptops. Who knows, maybe in the end we even have to thank Microsoft for having “pushed” the Japanese technology company to get to work with a new portable PlayStation.
