soon a single reservation system?

Ursula von der Leyen is proposing to simplify travel in Europe by creating a single booking system for train tickets across EU countries in the future. This is good news for European travellers, who may have to wait a few years before the system becomes operational.

Simplifying cross-border train travel

She has finally been re-elected for a second five-year term as President of the European Commission. As part of her campaign, ahead of the election, Ursula von der Leyen made proposals to: simplify cross-border travel across different countries of the European UnionIn March 2024, MEPs had already voted for better coordination of rail transport.

The now reappointed President of the European Commission has thus proposed the creation of a single system for booking train tickets across the Union. This would involve:“a regulation providing for a single digital reservation and ticketing system so that Europeans can buy a single ticket on a single platform”, A promise that is part of the political guidelines of the next Commission for the period 2024-2029.

A single ticket on a single platform

Dear Ursula von der Leyen, “Cross-border rail travel remains too complicated for many citizens. They should be able to use open booking systems to purchase trans-European journeys from multiple providers.” The fact that Europeans could buy a single ticket on a single platform would finally put the train on an equal footing with the plane within the Union in terms of simplicity of booking and travel.

As part of the Union’s strategy to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the aim is also to develop largely decarbonised rail transport. “To achieve our climate goals, we need to make it easier for citizens to switch to more sustainable options,” Ursula von der Leyen argued in particular.
