Google is in a difficult position when it comes to tablets. One runs on Android, the other on Chrome OS, but where does the future lie? An insider at Google knows this.
‘Chrome OS becomes Android on tablets’
Chrome OS seems to be coming to an end, at least on tablets. The news comes from an insider at Google. He says that the tech giant wants to combine the best functions of Android and Chrome OS in a new version of Android. The switch will reportedly only take place with unreleased tablets.
Chrome OS is an operating system that you mainly see on Chromebooks. These are more like laptops and so the software is optimized for use with a keyboard and mouse. Yet almost all Chromebooks also have a touchscreen, the keyboard can often be removed and many Android apps run directly on Chrome OS, as you can see below.
The similarity with tablets running on Android is therefore great. Android is an operating system made for phones. The tablet version therefore resembles an enlarged smartphone experience. That makes Android tablets great for playing games and watching movies and series, but the operating system does not hold up for productivity and work.
According to the insider at Google (via Android Authority) Google wants to combine the forces of both operating systems. For this, the tech giant is betting everything on Android, instead of developing a new operating system. With a tablet version for Android that is strong for both entertainment and productivity, Google’s software should finally be able to really compete with Apple’s iPadOS.
It is currently unknown when Google will introduce the new software. It is also not yet clear whether Android will only appear on Chrome OS tablets, or also on Chromebooks. The long-awaited Google Pixel Laptop is also one of the first devices on which the updated operating system is expected.
