Soon easier to recover hacked Facebook accounts

Meta will introduce facial recognition to help recover hacked or lost accounts on Facebook and Instagram. This by submitting a “video selfie” to Meta. According to Meta, the selfie is encrypted and stored securely, then deleted after verification is complete.

– Users seem to expect Meta to be able to restore hijacked accounts for them, something that is impossible to do securely because the accounts were created without users authenticating themselves. That Meta is experimenting with alternative ways of verifying people who need to restore their accounts is therefore completely reasonable, and it is difficult to say boo or bea until it has been tested in practice, says IT security expert Karl Emil Nikka.

Right now, Meta is working with lawmakers and experts to make the technology user-friendly. The technology will be rolled out in stages during the the coming monthsbut it will take some time before the function is launched within the EU. According to Engadget discussions are still ongoing with European legislators. Meta hopes to launch the feature globally next year.

Previously, Meta used facial recognition to automatically tag people in photos and videos, but this feature was removed in 2021 for privacy-related reasons.
