Digital keys: the future of car rental?
One of the most intriguing features introduced in 2020 is that of digital keys. Using NFC technology, iPhone and Apple Watch users can store their compatible car keys directly in the Wallet app. Currently, more than 30 automotive manufacturers have already integrated this feature into their vehicles, and Bailey revealed that Apple is working to further expand this support.
But that’s not all: Apple’s vision doesn’t stop at car ownership. Bailey imagines a future where digital keys can also be used for rental car. In practice, the user could book the car online, confirm authentication and identity, and then receive a digital key directly on their device. A solution that would reduce waiting times and significantly simplify the rental experience. On the other hand, many hotel chains have already implemented digital keys for accessing rooms, so this extension to the world of cars seems more than plausible.
Apple isn’t limited to digital vehicle keys. In 2022, it introduced support for i digital documentsincluding IDs and driving licenses, within the Wallet. Bailey acknowledges that adoption of this feature hasn’t exploded yet, but she believes it’s only a matter of time before it becomes common practice. The security and privacy benefits are notable, and the ability to replace physical documents with digital versions represents a game changer in how we manage our identity.
Apple is, according to Bailey, only at the beginning of what he calls a “long vision” to replace the traditional wallet. An ambitious project which, considering technological evolution, could change the way we experience daily transactions and interaction with transport and identity services.
