A company called KSMC could compete with TSMC more effectively.
A The Korea Bizwire according to his information, industrial and scientific actors in South Korea are proposing the creation of a new company that could be called the Korea Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (KSMC) and modeled after Taiwan’s TSMC.
The idea itself was presented at a seminar of the Korean National Academy of Engineering in December, and according to experts, the creation of KSMC would require an initial investment of $13.9 billion, while it could generate up to $208.7 billion in benefits by 2045. Of course, the factory construction and development costs will also have to be taken into account.
The proposal would address a number of issues, including technological lag with Taiwan. The latter does not only mean TSMC, but also UMC and PSMC. With the three contract manufacturers mentioned, Taiwan largely covers the needs of the world market, and they can acquire more than 250 chip design partners. In essence, KSMC could supplement Samsung, for example, in this way, thus improving South Korea’s competitiveness in the field of chip production.
Ahn Ki-hyun, representing the Semiconductor Industry Association, also urged the government to help the semiconductor manufacturing industry with an amount equal to 208.7 billion dollars by 2047 through subsidies and tax breaks. In addition, the regulation of the 52-hour work week also came up, because based on feedback from TSMC engineers, faster development may require longer working days.
