South Korea: Former President Yoon arrested

Authorities announced the arrest of late President Yoon Seok-geil today, about 1.5 months after he plunged the country into political chaos by declaring temporary martial law on December 3 following a raid on his residence.

The team conducting the investigation against him “executed an arrest warrant for President Yoon Seok-geil today at 10:33” (local time; 03:33 Greek time), the authorities announced. Yun, who is facing prosecution for “rebellion” over the declaration of martial law — a charge that carries the death penalty — is the first South Korean head of state to be arrested in the country’s history.

Police, prosecutors and other officials from the high-profile corruption investigation agency took the late head of state to the prosecutor’s office for questioning, according to South Korea’s official Yonhap news agency.

More than 3,000 police and investigators converged on the late president’s residence before dawn, pushing through a gathering of his supporters and MPs from his ruling People’s Power Party who had gathered there to try to prevent his arrest. Small episodes broke out.

Yun himself said he decided to surrender even though he considers the process illegal to avoid “bloodshed”.

Yun’s defense argued from the outset that Yun’s arrest was illegal, an action with the sole purpose of publicly humiliating him.

His decision to declare martial law stunned the Asian country and plunged it into an unprecedented political crisis. It led to his suspension from parliament on 14 December.

The Constitutional Court has begun to consider whether he will indeed be removed from power.
