National security advisors from Korea, the United States, and Japan expressed serious concerns about North Korea’s deployment of troops to Russia.

Director of the National Security Office Shin Won-sik, U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, and Japanese National Security Director Takeo Akiba jointly expressed “serious concern” at a meeting held in Washington, D.C. on the 25th (local time) and expressed “serious concern” about Russia and North Korea. They called for a halt to the transfer of weapons and troops.

White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby briefed on the details of the meeting and added, “Korea, the United States, and Japan will work together to resolve the growing tensions in conflict areas between Ukraine and Russia.”

Prior to this, each country separately issued a statement condemning North Korea’s deployment of troops. The United States has warned that “if North Korean troops are deployed to fight Ukraine, (North Korea) will become a ‘legitimate target of attack.’”

Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimaya Hayashi also said, “We are watching with serious concern” about North Korea’s troop deployment and “We will cooperate closely with the international community to fully implement the Security Council resolution and realize peace in Ukraine.”

South Korea is considering additional military weapons support if the dispatched North Korean military engages in actual combat with Ukraine. In a press release immediately after the summit with Polish President Andrzej Duda on the 24th, President Yoon Seok-yeol said, “We will support Ukraine step by step depending on North Korea’s movements.”

Regarding President Yoon’s remarks, the President’s Office explained, “We can consider supporting weapons for defensive purposes, and if the limit is exceeded, we can even consider offensive weapons at the end.”
