Space&Defense: Space has a transformative power

In the first round, the participants tour the challenges and opportunities of the space sector.

The most pressing technology and information communication issues of our present and future will be discussed between October 15 and 17 by representatives of the IT sector, the government, and the civil sphere in the next three days in Balatonfüred. The main focus of the jubilee Infotér Conference is cyber security and artificial intelligence, but in addition to these, exciting, current topics such as the circular economy will also be discussed.

For the third year now, the conference is being held on the zero day of the conference Space&Defense themed day. ALBERT BIRÓ, Secretary General of the Informatics for Society Association reminded: the topicality of the topic is not only due to the armed conflicts taking place in the region and the threats experienced in cyberspace, but also the development potential of the space sector. That is why today there are meaningful discourses on, among other things, the development of military forces, the development of export capabilities in the space sector and the defense industry, as well as robotic innovations in modern warfare.

“We are very proud that for the first time this year we are organizing a round table discussion on space industry ecosystem development,” added the Secretary General in his greeting, “the central theme of which is to support the development of space industry startups and scaleups in the Central and Eastern European region. We will examine how the competitiveness of the region can be strengthened, what are the funding sources and strategies needed for innovations.”

KRISTOF SZALAY-BOBROVNICZKY Minister of National Defense said in his video message: he considers it very important that, in addition to broader technological trends, defense issues are also emphasized at the Infotér Conference. “We increasingly recognize that space plays a key role in defense and national security. When President Donald Trump created the independent space force in 2019, many welcomed it with skepticism, but at the same time, NATO also declared outer space a battlefield.” The minister emphasized that since then it is clear that we are on the verge of a new space race, and space technology is not only a tool for our discoveries, but also the basis of the leadership, management, communication and intelligence capabilities of modern armies.

That we live in an age of conflict, Dr. ZSOLT KUTNYÁNSZKY State Secretary responsible for defense strategy and human policy also mentioned, adding that the XXI. 20th century’s force development challenge is to take into account those technologies that were not typical before, but today their importance is explosive. The armed conflicts of the future will also be largely determined by the space industry, robotics and artificial intelligence.

In his presentation on Hungary’s military developments, he touched on the modernization of existing assets both in the air and on land. “Hungary is committed to rebuilding the armed forces. When we talk about military development, we also talk about the strengthening of our alliance role in NATO.”

  1. FERENCZ ORSOLYA Ministerial Commissioner responsible for space research in his presentation on the HUNOR astronaut program, he spoke in detail about the training process for astronaut candidates, during which, in addition to acquiring scientific knowledge, the aspirants were also expected to undergo, among other things, aircraft training and a very tough isolation training. “All along, we have been thinking about a national program, the great advantage of which are the countless experimental proposals and the now more than 100 professionals who have joined the exceptional process. For example, we already have a space doctor, there was no such specialist in Hungary before. With the scientific and technological results, our economic potential and market capacities have also increased. All of Hungary can be proud of the results.”

Reserve research astronaut Gyula Cserényi and research astronaut Tibor Kapu are currently in Houston, from where they will register for the evening round table discussion of the Infotér Conference, in which our national hero, Bertalan Farkas, will also participate in person. According to Orsolya Ferencz, one of the most important benefits of the space program is that it aroused the interest of young Hungarians in the sector and keeps talent at home.

RODRIGO DA COSTA, az The executive director of EUSPA (EU Agency for the Space Programme) began his presentation with the important role that space plays in the everyday life and safety of EU citizens. Many services now require space data, so critical infrastructures require continuous monitoring. He said: EUSPA is the leader of the European space sector with its various activities, such as the GALILEO global satellite navigation system, the GOVSATCOM EU government satellite communication program, or the Cassini program, which supports businesses interested in the space sector and thus creates a living space ecosystem.

As the director put it at the end of his presentation:

“The present is the best time to engage in space exploration and space-related activities, as space has transformative power in global challenges!”

The Infotér Conference Space&Defense on the afternoon of its zero day, the participants will hear about space industrial ecosystem development, the future of XR technology in the army, the development of export capabilities in the space sector and robotic innovations in modern warfare, among other things.
