Spain: Record amount of cocaine in banana shipment from Ecuador

The largest amount of cocaine ever discovered, Spanish police in the port of Algeciras in southern Spain seized a record 13 tons of cocaine, which they found in a container with a cargo of bananas from Ecuador.

The amount, discovered on October 14, breaks the previous record of 9.4 tonnes of cocaine found in 2023 also at the port of Algeciras, which is the fourth largest container port in Europe.

“It is obvious that these 13 tons of cocaine were not only intended for the Spanish market. The Spanish market cannot absorb such a large amount of drugs at once. This drug was going to be distributed throughout Europe,” Antonio Jesus Martines, head of the National Police’s Central Narcotics Prosecution Brigade, told reporters.

Spanish police were on alert when they were tipped off by their counterparts in Ecuador, the world’s biggest banana exporter, that a suspicious shipment was on its way.

Martinez said a woman, a partner of the company that received the shipment, had been arrested, although the two managers of the importing company were absconding.
