The person who sat in the Tesla Cybertruck that exploded in front of a Donald Trump hotel in Las Vegas in the US state of Nevada on Wednesday was a soldier in the US Army.
This is confirmed by the US Army, according to the AP news agency.
The man’s name was Matthew Livelsberger and, according to the army, he was part of the Green Berets, which is a popular name for the US Army’s Special Forces. This is stated by the army according to AP.
He has a past as a special forces student, where he served actively from 2006 to 2011 – with a brief stint in the National Guard from 2011 to 2012, and in the Army Reserve from July 2012 to December 2012, after which he returned to active duty.
At the time of the explosion, he was according to The New York Times on leave from his job.
CBS News has spoken to two relatives of the deceased Matthew Livelsberger, who say, among other things, that his wife had not heard from him for several days before the explosion. One of those CBS News has spoken to is Livelsberge’s father, who last heard from his son on Christmas Day, where he describes everything as normal. He also says that Livelsberger was a “passionate father”.
According to the AFP news agency, the suspect was found with a gunshot wound to the head:
“We discovered through the medical examiner’s office that the person had been shot in the head before the car detonated,” says Las Vegas Sheriff Kevin McMahill.
The authorities announce that it is believed to be Livelsberger himself who had taken the shot.
No supposed connection to New Orleans
The American Federal Police, the FBI, estimates that the explosion, which injured seven and took Livelsberger’s life, was an isolated incident.
Jeremy Schwartz, acting special agent in the FBI responsible for the Las Vegas office, told CNN earlier Thursday Danish time.
According to sources in the police, the Tesla car was rented through the car rental company Turo. This has been written by several American media.
So was a car that drove into a crowd in New Orleans on the night of Wednesday, January 1, killing 15 people.
Here the driver – Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar – was shot dead by the police.
It is “coincidental” that the cars are rented through the same company. Kevin McMahill, who is the sheriff of Las Vegas, stated this at a press conference.
The authorities are still investigating the case.
Earlier on the night of Thursday, it was heard from the President of the United States, Joe Biden, that they were investigating whether the two incidents could be connected.
According to the AP, Livelsberger has spent time at the Fort Bragg base in North Carolina. The same is the case with Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar.
However, AP writes that Livelsberger and Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar have not been on base at the same time.
