Spotify wants to compete more with YouTube and will therefore soon implement two changes. These should ensure that more users watch videos on Spotify and that more creators upload their material.
Music service Spotify has had video podcasts for more than two years, but the streaming service will soon introduce an important change, making it more of a direct rival to YouTube. Spotify will soon pay creators based on the ‘engagement’ of their videos among Premium subscribers. The more Spotify subscribers watch or share their videos, the more a creator earns from them.
This should make it more attractive for creators to also upload to Spotify. YouTube has been sharing revenue from advertising and YouTube Premium subscriptions with creators for years. Spotify is now essentially imitating the successful model of Google’s video service.
‘Better experience’
Spotify CEO Daniel Ek gave a presentation today to convince creators. “We can deliver an experience for your audience that is better than any other platform,” I said during an event in Los Angeles.
It is still unclear exactly how much Spotify plans to pay to creators. The Swedish company has not yet provided a detailed explanation of how the payouts are calculated. Spotify does promise to provide creators with insight in a special hub.
Commercial blocks
Spotify announced yet another change around videos. The automated commercial blocks in videos on the platform are turned off for Spotify Premium subscribers. They can then watch commercial-free. This should increase the number of videos viewed on the streaming service. Free users will continue to see advertisements.
The streaming service will introduce the changes in the first countries on January 2. These are the US, the UK, Australia and Canada. It is not yet known when it will be the Netherlands’ turn.
