Spotify will not follow Amazon and other companies in bringing employees back to the office

Digital music platform Spotify introduced its “work from anywhere” policy in February 2021. Their employees can work full-time from home, in the office, or create a hybrid schedule with their manager.

Amazon may be ordering employees to return to the office five days a week, but Spotify won’t follow suit.

Director of HR at Spotify, Katarina Berg, confirmed the company’s work-from-anywhere (WFA) policy in a recent interview with Raconteur on Monday, saying that “work is not a place you come to, but something you do.”

“You can’t spend a lot of time recruiting adults and then treat them like children,” Berg explained.

Great flexibility

Spotify has also expanded its flexibility in terms of countries and cities from which employed they can work, even for locations that are not near a physical office.

Berg stated that some employees prefer office work, and the company will continue to have physical offices and so-called a crucial week where the teams meet in person.

And the employees seem to have responded well. Just a year after the new WFA initiative, the company saw a 15 percent lower attrition rate in the second quarter of 2022 compared to the same period in 2019, a reduction in time to hire by six days and increased diversity in the workplace, Fortune reported at the time.

Challenge za Spotify

But remote access does present challenges, Berg admitted, saying it’s “harder” to collaborate virtually. Those concerns have led Spotify to collaborate with the Stockholm School of Economics to further research the effects of remote work on innovation and engagement.

“Does that mean we’re going to start forcing people to come to the office as soon as it becomes a trend? No,” Berg admitted to Raconteur.

The latest reaffirmation of the WFA policy bucks the current trend of companies advocating for employees to be in the office more days a week. As restrictions due to COVID-19 have eased, several large companies have begun to move away from the hybrid scheduling policies they adopted during the pandemic.

At Amazon, employees are expected to return to the office starting in January, and companies such as Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan have already implemented work-from-company policies. Other companies with hybrid schedules, including Metta, faced off against implementing the change and threatened to monitor office attendance.
