The iconic gold bikini worn by Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia in the movie «Return of the Jedi» of the series Star Wars sold for approx €160.000, according to Dallas-based auction house Heritage Auctions.
The outfit became famous when Fisher wore it at the beginning of the 1983 film, in the scene where Leia was captured by Jamba the Hutt in his palace on the planet Tatooine and forced into slavery.
Designed by the late Richard Miller, the chief sculptor of Industrial Light & Magic, the visual effects company founded by Star Wars creator George Lucas, the outfit includes 7 different parts. Joe Maddalena, executive vice president of Heritage, said the outfit sold was one that was screen tested and worn by Fisher on the film’s set, but ultimately did not make it into the final version of the film as it was replaced with a more comfortable one.
The gold bikini has become somewhat controversial over time, with some fans seeing it as a means of sexualizing Fisher for the show’s predominantly male base. Star Wars.
In a November 2016 interview on NPR’s “Fresh Air,” Fisher said that wearing the costume was not her choice: “When director George Lucas showed me the costume, I thought he was joking and it made me nervous. I had to sit very straight because I couldn’t have wrinkles in my ribs. There were no wrinkles allowed, so I had to sit very, very straight.”
