SpaceX is preparing to offer commercial customers a new service based on its Starlink satellite network, providing ultra-fast internet with download speeds of up to 8 Gbps even in remote areas without ground infrastructure.
Recently, SpaceX VP of Starlink engineering Michael Nicolls tweeted the results of a speed test from Jacksonville, USA, which showed that Starlink is capable of delivering high data rates of up to 8102 Mbps using mobile gateway technology.
According to PCMag, the new service appears to be an expansion of SpaceX’s “community base station” business line, which it announced back in January. The company currently offers users a Starlink satellite dish that delivers speeds between 50 Mbps and 300 Mbps. However, for commercial customers like internet service providers, SpaceX will begin building base stations using mobile gateway technology, which feature large antennas that can deliver broadband to remote areas that don’t have access to fiber networks.
The first such station has already been built in Unalaska, an island town near Alaska, which is currently successfully providing local residents with high-speed Internet through a local provider. The Unalaska station is based on the ground, but SpaceX also plans to implement mobile gateway technology on military ships and aircraft.
SpaceX will charge companies $1.25 million to build these stations, with monthly payments starting at $75,000 depending on how much traffic they use.
