Stefan Kretzschmar suggests trainer hammer

Trainer’s hammer in the HBL? Handball legend Stefan Kretzschmar suggests a spectacular solution to Kellerkind TVB 1898 Stuttgart when looking for a new coach.

“If you want an aggressive, slightly sour coach who will now take action with a certain degree of severity, then you should call Maik Machulla,” said the 51-year-old in the “Kretzsche und Schmiso” podcast.

Machulla, who coached SG Flensburg-Handewitt very successfully between 2017 and 2023, only moved to the Danish top club Aalborg Handbold in the summer. After four months, the 47-year-old had to take his hat off again last weekend.

“Maik was blown away. He was simply informed of the decision.” said Kretzschmar, who knows Machulla very well from their playing days together at SC Magdeburg. “That’s hardcore. In the league he won six games, a draw and two defeats. And there are playoffs in Denmark. You don’t have to lose your nerve now.”

Machulla’s expulsion “could not have been a result-oriented dismissal,” the handball icon speculated. “That’s a tough number.”

Handball: Maik Machulla’s HBL comeback?

Machulla himself appeared “very disappointed and angry” at the end of his short Aalborg era in a message to “TV2”. “I don’t understand the expulsion. I think we started the season under difficult conditions. It’s not always fair,” he also said.

However, it seems extremely unrealistic that the former Flensburg successful coach is now returning to the HBL in a timely manner and is hiring in Stuttgart of all places. After seven defeats in a row, the TVB is only in 17th place in the table.

After the 20:33 defeat at TSV Hannover-Burgdorf, the club announced the separation from coach Michael Schweikardt. The search for a new coach is “in full swing” during the current international break, said Stuttgart, and a “prompt solution” is being sought.
