Stellantis threatens to drop certain brands if they are not profitable

Stellantis, one of the world’s biggest car groups, says it may shed unprofitable brands.

Currently, the Stellantis car group includes no less than 14 brands, which makes it one of the largest car concerns in the world.

The brands that are part of this group are: Citroen, Fiat, Opel, Vauxhall, Peugeot, Abarth, Ram, Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, Lancia, DS Automobiles, Alfa Romeo and Maserati.

This colossus of the automotive world was born from the merger of the PSA and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) groups in 2021. However, the group may drop certain brands in the future, especially if they do not prove profitable.

right Reuters, this very large group could be narrowed at some point in the future, according to CEO Stellantis. Carlos Tavares says unprofitable brands will be phased out: “If they don’t make money, we’ll close them. We can’t afford to have brands that don’t make money.”

Stellantis does not want brands that do not bring profit

Tavares didn’t specifically name any brands, but some are more exposed than others. Industry experts said Stellantis could try to sell Maserati and ditch Lancia or DS. However, this is just speculation at this point and we don’t know anything for sure. However, we cannot expect such a fate for Citroen, Peugeot or Jeep.

Stellantis does not publish figures for individual brands, except for Maserati, which reported an operating loss of 82 million euros in the first half of this year. Shares in the Milan-based maker fell as much as 12.5% to their lowest level since August 2023. That brings the loss for the year to 22%, some of the worst performance by a European carmaker.
