The Steve Jobs Archive recently shared new footage of the Apple co-founder speaking at the 1983 International Design Conference in Aspen. This never-before-seen footage offers a glimpse into the Jobs’ predictions about the future of technology.
In his speech, Jobs states that computers would become essential elements in homes, The Internet would revolutionize global communication, and mobile devices would evolve into powerful personal computers. Steve Jobs then discusses the importance of intuitive user interfaces in guiding technology design and predicts that the creation and distribution of digital content would transform entire industries.
Jobs also had a clear vision of the role of artificial intelligence. He believed that AI would improve the user experience by making technology more intuitive, automating complex tasks, and integrating into devices to make them smarter and more accessible.
Jony Ive, Apple’s former Chief Design Officer, introduced the video with touching reflections on Jobs:
Steve rarely attended design conferences. This is 1983, before the Mac was launched, and it was still the early days of Apple. I find it remarkable how deep his understanding was of the changes that were about to happen as computers became more widespread.
Ive highlighted how Jobs was not only a prophet of technological innovation, but also a key architect of products that would change our culture and our lives.
In his speech, Jobs emphasizes that in the United States, efforts had been focused mainly on automobiles, neglecting consumer electronics. He speaks of the national responsibility not only to produce, but to design. Jobs also predicted that by 1986, PC sales would surpass automobiles and that, in the next ten years, people would spend more time with a PC than in a car.
Jobs asked those present to think about the design of these products, because whether they were well designed or not, they were going to be made. His ability to explain complex technologies in accessible and relevant terms remains one of the most memorable aspects of his talent.
