Stoianoglo, strange answer when asked about his Romanian passport

The candidate of the Socialist Party of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM) for the position of president, Alexandr Stoianoglo, avoided answering a question from his opponent, Maia Sandu, the current president, about the advantages offered by Romanian citizenship, which he obtained a few years ago.

During an electoral debate, without a moderator, which took place on Sunday, before the second round of the presidential elections, Maia Sandu asked Stoianoglo a question about the benefits of the Romanian passport.

“Now, when we talk about Romania, I want to ask you one thing here: Mr. Stoianoglo, you are a European citizen, because you are a citizen of Romania, but in the referendum you did not want to support this. Why do you think that you should have the benefits that the passport of a European citizen offers, but the other people from Moldova do not? Maybe not all people want to take Romanian citizenship or maybe not all people can take Romanian citizenship. You, through your decision in the referendum, limit other people’s right to have the same advantages that you have thanks to this Romanian citizenship”.

The candidate of the Socialists not only did not provide an answer to the question addressed by Maia Sandu in Romanian, but decided to refer to another topic, speaking in Russian. In his answer, he referred to the European Charter of Regional or Minority Languages and the rights of the Hungarian minority in Romania.

Earlier in the debate, Stoianoglo said that he did not vote in the referendum on the country’s accession to the EU, which took place together with the first round of the presidential elections a week ago, because this vote would have been initiated only with the aim of to create an electoral advantage for the current president.
