Stole a $575,000 Ferrari but didn’t notice what was in the passenger seat

It can be assumed that people who are willing to shell out a small fortune for a Ferrari will also invest good money for its protection and security, i.e. anti-theft technology. However, this was not the case with one man from Waterbury (a city in the US state of Connecticut) whose expensive Ferrari 812 GTS worth as much as 575 thousand dollars was stolen.

The police report does not state how the car was stolen, but that is why it is mentioned how it was found, it says Index.hr.

Neither sophisticated technology nor a police report helped in catching the thief, but – Apple’s headphones. Namely, the owner of the car left his AirPods on the passenger seat, and thanks to Apple’s Find My application for finding lost devices using a Mac or iPhone, the owner of the Ferrari managed to locate the headphones, and thus his car. He immediately forwarded that information to the police, who soon managed to find the car and the thief.

When the police stopped the thief at the gas station, he crashed his Ferrari into their car (damage was minor), after which he ran away and left his phone in the car.

The police managed to get hold of the information from the thief’s phone and found out that it was a 22-year-old man who is already known for stealing cars. Interestingly, he was arrested ten days later, after the police found another car that had been stolen earlier in Njujoek, and that young man, as well as his 19-year-old accomplice in crime, ended up in prison, reports Zimo.

US police have previously advised drivers to use devices such as AirTag, an Apple device that allows location tracking. It is good to put it e.g. on keys, in wallets, travel bags, cars and the like so that they can be found more easily in case of loss. Location tracking does not require an internet connection, instead it connects to nearby Apple devices to send a signal about its location.
