Stop trains between Calabria and Campania, Italy split in two until Friday: “Reschedule your trip”

From today until Friday the railway line between Vallo della Lucania and Sapri of the Tirrenica Meridionale, the most important north-south railway connection between Sicily, Calabria and the rest of Italy, is closed. The four-day stoppage is necessary to remove the carriages that derailed on July 9 in Centola.

“Passengers are advised to reschedule their journey,” this is how Trenitalia warns travellers who from today and in the next few days want to travel by train to and from Calabria and Sicily. Due to a total railway interruption that will continue until next Friday, July 26, in fact, the High Speed, Intercity and Regional trains will suffer cancellations, delays and very heavy limitations of a path that will effectively split Italy in two.

It’s all the fault of the derailment of some empty carriages of a freight train, which occurred on July 9th in Campania, in the province of Salerno. After two weeks of train cancellations and chaos on the route, where the train continued on a single track and at a reduced speed until today, causing serious inconvenience to travellers, the workers have decided to total closure of the Battipaglia – Sapri line, fundamental route for the north-south connection as it is a fundamental hub for every train on the Southern Tyrrhenian Railway, the most important north-south railway connection between Sicily, Calabria and the rest of Italy.

The four days of stop are needed to remove the carriages that derailed on 9 July between Pisciotta and Policastro, near the Centola station. An intervention that required the total suspension of railway traffic along the entire Battipaglia – Sapri route. In detail, as explained by Trenitalia, from 22:00 on Monday 22 July to 06:00 on Friday 26 July, for works to restore the infrastructure following the derailment at Centola, the train traffic will be suspended between the stations of Vallo della Lucania and Sapri.

Some regional trains will be cancelled. Some that travel north will therefore stop in Sapri where there will be shuttle buses to Vallo della Lucania. The same goes for trains to the south that will stop in Vallo della Lucania with buses that will then take you to Sapri. Long-distance trains such as Intercity trains will suffer the same fate with route limitations and cancellations. Trains Frecciarossa and Frecciargento headed to Reggio Calabria will instead stop in Battipaglia. Some of them will undergo a change of number with departure from Sapri. The same for those in the opposite direction with a stop in Sapri.

A real chaos for those who have to travel given that, according to Trenitalia and Rfi forecasts, traffic will gradually resume only from Friday 26 July, even if High Speed, Intercity and Regional trains may still experience delays and be subject to route limitations or cancellations.
