Strategy Frostpunk 2 is out, what are the reviews?

Frostpunk 2 is a building strategy from Polish developers 11 bit studioswhich follows on from the first volume released in 2018 (from their earlier production, let’s also recall the successful title This War of Mine). This time, too, we are tasked with solving various moral dilemmas, when difficult decisions will have to be made to ensure the best possible functioning of the managed city in merciless freezing conditions. Compared to the first part, however, the game is much more extensive, offers more complex mechanics, and on the technical side, there has been a change from its own Liquid Engine used last on Unreal Engine 5 od Epic Games.

The game was originally supposed to be released on July 25, but at the end of June the developers announced a delay of 2 months for today, commenting that based on player feedback from the beta that took place this spring, they need more time to debug and add new features so that they are in the game at release instead of being added later via patches. That is so that the game can offer the best possible gaming experience on the day of release. The release took place today at 19:00 our time, however the game has been in early access for 3 days for anyone who was willing to pay extra for it.

What are the reviews like?

Already Metacritic the game now has an average rating 86 % from 61 reviews. A summary of some of them:

“Frostpunk 2 does exactly what a sequel should do. It excels in all the ways the original game did, while scaling up and adding even more. It’s an excellent extension of everything we loved about Frostpunk and delivers a new, completely unique experience and a story that fans of the original and newcomers to the franchise are sure to love.”

“A sequel that takes Frostpunk’s exciting foundation of building a city in freezing conditions and develops it in every direction, while losing none of what made the series unique.”

“Frostpunk 2 successfully expands on everything that was in the first part of this brutal building strategy, and its larger scale, great story campaign and new faction system are as ‘fun’ as a simulator like this can really be.”

“What the developers at 11 bit studios have created here is truly exceptional, as it lives up to its name. Anyone looking to test their skills in an unusual type of strategy builder might want to try this one. But if you’re looking for something a little more laid-back, you won’t find it here . Because although there are quieter passages, the game will keep even experts in this type of game constantly moving, especially if the difficulty is increased.”

“Frostpunk 2 trades the intimacy and plight of individual survivors for the challenges of growth and sustainability. The threat of extinction mingles with economic challenges and the vaguely hopeful promise of long-term survival. Frostpunk 2 expands its scope and deepens the mechanics of the first game, while further increasing the complexity of the city-building style puzzle, which remains addictive and unique within the genre.”

“Frostpunk 2 doesn’t replace the first game. Instead, it elevates its rawest themes of human nature to sky-high heights. It offers a vastly different challenge in city-building, allowing the two games to exist in separate sectors of the genre.”
