Streaming tips: Prevented heroine, thriller series and Roncalli documentary

Here are our streaming recommendations for the coming week. It’s also about people with big dreams that quickly cause them some problems.

The British series “Extraordinary” is set in a world where every person over the age of 18 develops a superpower. Only 25-year-old Jen (Máiréad Tyers) has been waiting in vain and feels left out. She had just had to admit again in a disastrous job interview that she had no such ability. Now Jen seeks comfort from her casual boyfriend, the flying Luke.

Luckily, her roommates Carrie and Kash, as well as a mysterious stray cat, save her from sinking into self-pity. With a little hope and a lot of desperation, Jen sets out to find her superpower in this confusing world. However, in the process she might also discover the happiness of just being normal. The first season of the drama comedy, originally produced for Disney, can be seen in the ZDF media library from January 15th.

“Severance” is entering its second season. In the thriller series on Apple TV+, Mark Scout (Adam Scott) leads a team at Lumon Industries that undergoes a special procedure. The memories of their respective work and private lives are operationally separated from each other. The daring experiment in work-life balance is thrown into disarray when a secret slowly comes to light, forcing Mark to confront the true nature of his work – and himself. In the second season, Mark and his friends get caught up ever greater difficulties. Season 2 starts on January 17th, with a new episode every Friday until March 21st.

Artists, clowns and magicians – a good circus makes people dream. But what looks so easy in the ring is actually the result of hard work. Hardly anyone knows this better than Bernhard Paul. The Austrian founded the Circus Roncalli in Vienna 50 years ago and celebrated its world premiere at a cultural festival in Bonn in 1976.

The foundation for an international career that would take the troupe all the way to New York, with stars like Robert De Niro and Scarlett Johansson in the audience. But the path to fame was difficult, as the documentary series “Roncalli – Power of the Ring” shows, now shown in the ARD media library.

The three-part series traces the history of the circus with successes, crises and conflicts. The focus is on founder Bernhard Paul, who sticks to his life’s dream despite all the problems.
