As can be seen from the Audio Trends 2024 published by the media authorities during the Munich Media Days, the digitalization of broadcasting in Germany is already well advanced.

How many people still listen to the radio today?

Of the 65 million Germans who tune in to linear radio, regardless of the channel, 49 million use digital distribution channels. So DAB+ and web radio. This puts the net digitization rate at 75 percent.

93 percent of the population uses radio at least once within four weeks. The daily range is 72 percent. It is noticeable that radio is still used for a long time. There is an average of 244 minutes per day across all distribution channels. How long the radio is used also seems to depend on the type of reception. While DAB+ averages 155 minutes a day, web radio only has 115 minutes.

How is radio used by men and women?

Women and men use radio about equally at 52 to 48 percent. However, it is noticeable that men are more attracted to the newer digital distribution channels. 61 percent of them use DAB+, while only 39 percent of women use it. The situation is similar with web radio, where the ratio is 54 to 56 percent.

How is the radio usage of ARD and private stations?

Listeners have a large selection of private stations available, particularly on DAB+. But the ARD broadcasters also usually offer additional specialty channels via digital radio. Both the public and private worlds can do well on DAB+. According to Audio Trends 2024, their daily reach is roughly the same. It is noticeable that the listeners definitely know how to use the offerings of both radio worlds. The viewing time for the ARD and private channels is the same at 136 minutes each.

Web radio seems to be used a little differently. The private sector is ahead here. They clock in at 114 minutes a day, while the ARD channels only manage 103. However, the ARD channels via web stream are used by 3.3 million listeners every day, while commercial offerings are only consumed by 2.2 million.
