Study. The diversity of plant-based foods, essential for a healthy gut microbiome
A study of 21,000 people shows that the diversity and quantity of plant-based foods are key factors for a favorable gut microbiome, writes IFLScience, citing Nature Microbiology.
Study. The diversity of plant-based foods, essential for a healthy gut microbiome
The results showed significant differences between omnivores, vegetarians and vegans, depending on eating habits. Although vegans and vegetarians had healthier diets, omnivores had a greater diversity of gut microbiomes.
However, diversity is not always an indicator of a healthy microbiome, given that certain bacteria associated with meat digestion can contribute to increased disease risk.
On the other hand, vegans had a microbiome rich in bacteria that help ferment fiber and contribute to the formation of short-chain fatty acids, such as butyrate, which are beneficial for reducing inflammation and supporting a healthy metabolism.
Vegetarians had a specific bacterial signature, with higher levels of Streptococcus thermophilus, a bacterium used in yogurt production that can influence toxins in the gut.
The main message of the study refers to the fact that, regardless of the chosen diet, the quality of the diet is essential. The amount and diversity of plant-based foods have a significant impact on the health of the gut microbiome.
