A new study conducted by Pew Research shows that politicians and news content represent only a small part of the accounts followed by US adults on TikTok, writes Engadget.

According to the study, which analyzed 227,946 accounts followed by 664 users, less than 1% of these are accounts of politicians, civic activists or journalists. Most users follow accounts that post entertainment content, humor or viral dance videos.

Even when accounts discussing politics are followed, they are often mixed with other topics such as entertainment. Approximately 43% of the accounts that discuss politics also address entertainment or pop culture topics.

Although the report does not directly rely on TikTok’s recommendation algorithms, its authors say that users’ interactions with the posts of the accounts they follow can significantly influence what appears in the “For You” feed. Previously, Pew found that 45% of TikTok users in the US see political content, even if they don’t follow such accounts.
